Charcot neuroarthropathy is seen in about 0.1-0.5% of the population. It is most often seen in the feet of diabetic patients and has an incidence of up to 16% in the feet of patients with diabetic neuropathy. The ankle and midfoot joints are often involved. Most cases of Charcot neuroarthropathy are probably triggered by some minor trauma that the patient does not remember.Distal sensory neuropathy is seen in nearly all patients with Charcot neuroarthropathy Damage to the nervous system centers that control bone and joint nutrition followed by multiple subclinical trauma to the joint results in an inflammatory cascade. The partial or complete lack of pain sensation leads to abnormal loading and joint damage.
