This regular feature aims to provide key political news in relation to dentistry and an update of the Faculty's policy activities. Oral health commitments included in the NHS Long Term Plan Published in January, the government's NHS Long Term Plan includes a number of commitments around improving the oral health of children and older people. It sets out what the priorities of the NHS will be for the next ten years and beyond, and how health services will adapt to meet future patient need. In terms of children's oral health, on which the Faculty has campaigned extensively in recent years, the plan discusses the need to reduce children and young people's A&E attendances by developing a more holistic model of care involving primary and community settings, including for oral health services. It also states that over the next five years, the government will invest to ensure that children and young people with learning disabilities in special residential schools can receive dental checks.
