Close encounter: When a pony and a grizzly bear come eyeball to eyeball on the trail, it takes a bit of luck - and spunk - to defuse the situation
Opinions always ranged far and wide about my pony, Foxfire. Some people found him charming. Some compared him to a hyperactive wind-up toy. Others thought I was crazy to keep him. He was the sort of pony who made his own decisions, without necessarily consulting his rider. Foxfire looked like a Pony of the Americas but I called him a racking pony. He could walk, trot, canter, gallop, pace, single-foot and foxtrot. Sometimes he made up gaits I couldn't identify.
