Implementation local wisdom of Karampuang tribal community for forest conservation in South Sulawesi, Indonesia

A significant decrease in the living environment quality has been affected by the current rate of deforestation. Therefore, society is expected to realize that local wisdom can help them deal with this deforestation issue. The local wisdom of Karampuang tribal community has been manifested in forest conservation knowledge. This ethnographic study aimed to explore the implementation forms local wisdomof the Karampuang tribal community in forest conservation. The research data were collected using a participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Findings indicate that various forms of Karampuang local wisdom are applied in forest conservation; they include Ale Karamak (the sacred forest), Aju Doti (the cursed tree), and Aju Ajajingeng (the birth tree). These practices constitute a part of local knowledge that has been taught from generation to generation in this community.
