Letter to the editor: Hidden pituitary gland: Implications for assessment

TO THE EDITOR: The se'lla turcica, which houses the pituitary gland, is bounded anteriorly by the middle clinoid process and bounded posteriorly by the dorsum sellae surmounted by the posterior clinoid process. This is visible on radiographs and MRIs. Recently, a mouse adenohy-pophysis was cultured from stem cells in vitro, with sonic hedgehog, bone morphogenetic proteins, and fibroblast growth factors added to the culture [Suga et al., 2011; Rizzoti and Lovell-Badge, 2011], These three factors are also necessary for normal development of the adenohypophysis [Cohen, 2010].
