摘要

At the start of this decade, Sudan was the largest country in Africa more than 40 million people dispersed among densely populated towns, poor rural areas and an immense desert region. After several years of civil war, the mainly Christian and Animist population of the southern part seceded from the mainly Arab Muslim northern part of the state, leading to the establishment of two independent countries: the Republic of Sudan (Sudan) and South Sudan. The separation has not necessarily resolved conflict, within and outside the states, with border disputes and civil war continuing in Darfur in western Sudan, resulting in death and significant distressing displacement of people. The President of Sudan, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who took power in a coup more than 25 years ago, is one of the few world leaders to face international arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity (see http://bashirwatch.org/).
