Halt in demand caps chromite market

Weak demand has prevented the price of foundry-grade chromite from increasing further, following an uptick in recent weeks. Prices for non-metallurgical chromite products, including foundry sand and chemical-grade material, remained unchanged in the week ended Tuesday June 30, according to Fastmarkets’ latest assessments. The level of supply was more than sufficient to cover current consumption levels, market participants said. While there were concerns in South Africa about the rate of production, the absence of meaningful levels of demand was widespread through the market.
