Tea (Camellia sinensis) originated in China. Emperor Shen Nung of China discovered tea in 2737 BC while travelling through a hilly terrain with his caravan. He fell sick and wanted to take rest in a hill forest. He was shivering with cold due to feverand asked for warm water. Tea was prepared in a make shift oven where a tea leaf fell on the sauce pan in which the water was being boiled. When Shen Nung drank that water ( tea decoction), he felt relaxed and his body ache was relieved. That was the first occasion when the health value of tea was discovered. Thereafter, tea travelled a long journey to climb up to the position as the mostly consumed drink in the world after water, the Adam's wine. Tea cultivation in India started in the Eighteenth century. Slowly but steadily tea became an important commercial commodity and a significant foreign money earner. Tea Research in India started in 1891. With the advent of Tea Research in India, the productivity and quality followed a steady upward graph and occupied a conspicuous place in the economical status.
