The tiger had killed the very night I arrived so I determined to sit up immediately, Leaving way down to the village and accompanied by the old man set out to reconnoitre. It was a peculiar characteristic of this tiger that he invariably dragged his "kill" to the same spot. Here the old man led me, and I immediately realized the sagacity of the beast. The carcass lay in an open plain, bordered on all sides by the forest, but without single tree of decent size within a hundred yards of the kill, thismade "sitting up" impossible so I determined to "dig in," but when on a closer inspection of the ground I discovered the very pit in which the young officer had lost his life. I changed my mind. I think it was the discovery of blood stained and sodden, within that was my undoing. From that moment I felt my nerve giving way, I was getting cold feet.
