ALFA ROMEO ENTERED ITS FIRST RACE IN 1911 AND HAS BEEN COMPETING EVER SINCE. Alfa Romeo's first car, the 24 HP, was considered "medium-sized" in its day, even with its more than 4.0 liters of displacement. The car sold well and was also innovative, with its single-piece block and cylinder heads and drilled pistons, to save weight. The 24 HP sported the company's first badge: the city of Milan's cross on the left, the Visconti serpent, or Biscione, on the right. On the outer ring was the word "ALFA" (without periods) and the word "Milano."
