An ambitious project to develop a lightweight urban electric vehicle capable of acing Euro NCAP crash tests posed several passive safety system engineering challenges Backed by funding from the European Union (EU), and devised by partners from Spain (Technalia, Business Innovation Brokers), Italy (Grupo Antolin), Denmark (Inserto E-Mobility), Germany (Technische Universitat Berlin, ZF) and the UK (TRL), BEHICLE, which stands for BEst-in-class veHICLE, is designed to fill a gap between the current quadricycle and a conventional passenger car. It is a lightweight urban electric vehicle (UEV) that fits within a number of parameters to give it the flexibility and small footprint of an urban vehicle, but sufficient strength and crashworthiness to be viable on the road among more conventional passenger cars.
