Honey Adulteration Creates More Problems Than First Apparent

As a follow up to the Apimondia Honey Adulteration Report (The ABK, Sept. 2017 p.10), the following indicates just how serious a problem the worldwide adulteration of honey is for other countries and just how much it impacts on the prices received byproducers. According to data from the US Pharmacological Food Fraud Database, honey is the third-ranked target for food fraud, behind milk and olive oil. In this case, the example comes from Canada, and the following is an extract from a letter written by the Alberta Beekeepers Commission to the Alberta Minister for Agriculture and Forestry. Interestingly, in his response to the letter, the Minister passed the buck to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on the issue of whose responsibility it was to deal with imports of fraudulent honey. DON'T think that these problems will not surface in Australia - it has already happened, with one shipment of honey from China being fraudulently labelled as having originated in Singapore, then being reshipped through Australia and being re-labelled as being of Australian origin before being sent on to the US.
