Covid-19 to heighten pressure on coal traffic: EIA

Efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic and the US economic slowdown will further reduce the need for coal transportation as consumption and production fall this year, indicates a new report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). US electric power coal-fired generation will fall by 20pc this year to 767bn kWh, EIA said in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook. It had previously expected coal power to drop by 16pc to 805bn kWh this year from 2019 levels.
