THE ADVISORY BOARD of AgriBusi-ness Global magazine includes some of the industry's most experienced and talented executives in crop inputs. Each year at the AgriBusiness Global~(TM) Trade Summit, the group gets together to review industry issues. Atthis year's meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a far-reaching discussion covered a wide range of topics that face the industry. Here are some insights:If ChemChina and Sinochem merge, it would create a $100 billion company, by far the largest crop protection company in the world. This comes on top of ChemChina's $43 billion acquisition of Syngenta. According to our board, the only way the new entity could make money "is to play monopolist." With a substantial portion of chemistry coming out of China, a ChemChina/Sinochem could control a significant portion of product. As one board member put it: "That's where the world's chemistry is coming from; (it's) very vulnerable. If you know where (those challenged) operations are, you can make judgments (about sourcing)." One challenge of such a merger is to figure out how to detangle the companies' product lines.
