Improving Energy-Saving System of Building Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Water Heating and Lighting

During the useful life cycle of buildings, which may lasts as long as 30-40 years, the energy consumption on HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and lighting may consume the majority of the total building energy required. Effective improvement of the building HVAC and lighting systems will reduce consumption of energy and emission of carbon. This paper presents the improvement and application of heat pump and lighting used in old buildings for studying the efficiencies and improvements of building HVAC, hot water and lighting systems. The studies are carried out by: (1) evaluating the energy consumption for existing HVAC, boiler, and lighting systems, (2) evaluating the energy efficiency of the improved heat pump system and the T5 illuminating system, and (3) conducting long-term system evaluations. The results indicate that using heat pumps to replace the old steam and electric boiler is effective to reduce energy consumption by improving existing HVAC systems to alleviate the loadings, and assist the air conditioning system by lowering the temperature of the cooling system. Renovating the existing lighting will effectively improve the illumination and eliminate the stroboscopic phenomenon with 30%-40% savings of energy consumption. Evaluating the overall building energy-saving results show that replacing the building HVAC system with heat pump and installing new lighting system lead to 55%-60% of energy savings and 70% of energy cost reduction. The proposed HVAC and lighting renovation is a practical and cost-effective measure for future implication.
