Analyzing the Relevance of Subagyo Sastrowardoyo’s Poetry on “Death” to Contemporary Issue of Humanity

Subagio Sastrowardoyo is a poet who is well known for his role in the development of Indonesian literature. His works are greatly admired by the language and literary community both in Indonesia and abroad, for their strong reflection of various life phenomena. This research is intendedto elicit the symbolic meanings that are revealed through the mythological illustrations and linguistic metaphors in Subagio’s literary works. By finding the relevance of Subagyo Sastrowardoyo’s poetry on death to contemporary issue of humanity, this research hopes to increasethe awareness of transcendental issues among Indonesians. This research employs a qualitative approach to describe various forms of living pictures through the expressive medium of language. This study is important for learning about the portrait of an age that is concealed in the great poeticworks of Subagio Sastrowardoyo.
