In the BioDur project,the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials(IFAM)is working with three partners from industry to investigate new ways of manufacturing mainly bio-based adhesives with similar properties to synthetic epoxy and polyurethane products.One particularly successful development was a skin-friendly and environmentally harmless adhesive suitable for artificial fingernails.Epoxy resins are used to produce high-strength bonds in many types of industrial product,but bisphe-nol A is used in the manufacturing process for these adhesives.This substance is suspected of being harmful to health and its use is likely to be restricted in future.Therefore,the objective of the BioDur project was to develop harmless,bio-based adhesive systems.The researchers also investigated the possibility of manufacturing bio-based polyurethane adhesives.
