Transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) are flexible patches that are attached to the skin to deliver medication. One or more active substances are embedded in the adhesive surface. When the patch is attached, these substances are absorbed through the skin in a controlled dose and then enter the bloodstream. Their advantage compared to tablets is that, due to the continuous delivery of active substances, they avoid the risk of too high or too low concentrations. As a result, the risk of side-effects is reduced. What is more, the substance does not pass through the stomach or digestive system. This means that it remains chemically unchanged and directly accesses that part of the body where it needs to take effect.
