Recycling is becoming an increasingly important means of ensuring that growing demands for raw materials can be met in the long-term. The adhesives industry has developed solutions that allow bonded components to be recycled efficiently. Bonding is a highly complex process. It begins with the design and planning of the bond. This is followed by a number of different steps which include analysing the material properties, designing the bond, selecting a suitable adhesive, applying a surface treatment, testing to ensure its reliability in use, preparing for production and, finally, creating the bond correctly. As Ansgar van Halteren, CEO of the German Adhesives Association (IVK), explained: "Components that are bonded in this way meet the demanding requirements of the recycling process. It must be possible to include debonding in the requirements profile and therefore in the design of the bond."
