摘要

I set off for Talcott Mountain State Park in July 2016 searching for ancient eastern redcedars (Juniprusvirginia.no). The sun was still high, being only just past midday, and I was hoping to find the grandparents of the 225-year-old redcedar I had found earlier that year. As I carefully scaled the slope that led to the bonsai-like trees known as krumm-holz, the German word for crooked wood, I realized that some of them may approach 300 years in age. Not that they are all that impressive in height orgirth; rather, they grow extremely slowly because of the harsh environments of the traprock ridges.
