Post production quality of pot roses: a result of interaction between cultivar, post-production conditions and numbers of open flowers at the time of sale

Potted plants of 3 Parade rose cultivars with 1-2, 3-5 or 6-10 open flowers were subjected to simulated transport for 4 or 7 days (16℃, 90-95% RH in darkness) and then placed in simulated domestic interior conditions (20deg , 60% RH and 8mol m-2 s-1light for 12 h/day). The total number of undamaged flowers was assessed on days 0, 7, 11, 14, 21 and 28. The length of simulated transport had no effect on flower damage in cultivars Dreaming Parade and Elegant Parade. Transport badly damaged flowers inElegant Parade but not in Dreaming Parade. In the latter, some buds developed into flowers during transport. In cv. Victory Parade, transport for 7 days damaged flowers but during transport for 4 days many flowers developed. The number of flowers open before simulated transport had no effect on post-production quality in Elegant Parade as all flowers were excessively damaged by transport. In Victory Parade, plants with few flowers at the outset had many flowers at the end of the assessment period whereas those with many flowers at the beginning had fewer at the end.
