The world is changing. In 2012 and beyond, physician relationships with hospitals and health care systems will assume greater importance. Over the past 2 decades, with the increase of ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), the gastroenter-ologist-hospital relationship has been challenging, as physicians pull lucrative cases into the ASCs while leaving the complex and poorly paid patients for the hospital. Traditionally, the hospital has been seen as an adversary, not interested in assisting physicians but rather looking for what physicians could bring to enhance hospital revenues.
