In 1771, the grand duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo decided to locate all of the duchy's scientific collections in a unique museum. The "Imperial Regio Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale" was named "La Specola" (observatory) when an astronomic observatory was added fifty years later.In the time of its inauguration in 1775, "La Specola" was the first museum in the world to allow free public access. The common people-provided they were "well dressed and clean"-could visit the Specola from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., after which the museum was to be left to the "smart scholars" for then studies.
