Acupuncture has gained increased credibility and popularity in both human and veterinary Jaimedicine as an option for pain relief. The American Animal HospitaL Association, American Association of Feline Practitioners, and World Small Animal Veterinary Association all include acupuncture as a safe, viable adjunct treatment in their guidelines for pain management.2,5 The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes over 30 medical conditions, including types of pain, that have been effectively heLped using acupuncture. In 2022, the WHO will include traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and acupuncture for the first time in its influential global medical compendium, furthering the awareness and use of these modalities in human medical protocols around theworld.1 Not surprisingly, more clients are asking about acupuncture and alternative options for their pets and more veterinarians are becoming integrative, offering a combination of conventional and alternative modalities.
