Oxcarbazepine, a structural derivative of carbamazepine, is a pro-drug that is rapidly and almost completely reduced to its active 10-monohydroxy metabolite (MHD), which is used widely as an anti-convulsant drug to treat generalized tonic-clonic and partial seizures.1,2 Oxcarbazepine was developed to mimic the efficacy of carbamazepine while minimizing the side effects of the original drug.3 Oxcarbazepine was developed by Novartis and is supplied for therapeutic purpose in 150, 300, and 600 mg solid dosage forms and as a 60 mg/mL suspension.
