Small- to medium-sized businesses account for around 80 per cent of illegal software copying, simply by making more copies than they have paid for. Most engineers would understandably see red if someone stole their designs or illegally copied their ideas. However, some still wouldn't think twice about using illegal software to help them create it. Yet, while free or cut-price - illegal - software might appeal, it can cost your business. Software piracy is a crime and, in the UK, is punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment. Even the civil courts could make you pay substantial costs and repay the profits made from the illegal use. Consequently, knowing what software you have is critical from a legal and reputation perspective. That's the 'stick'. The 'carrot' is that a controlled approach to managing software licences offers peace of mind, improved budget management and a stronger negotiating position for a better deal on your next upgrades.
