Metastatic renal cell carcinoma presenting as shoulder monoarthritis: diagnosis based on synovial fluid cytology and immunocytochemistry.

Malignant arthritis is a rare manifestation of metastat-ic disease and carries a poor prognosis. The most recent review of the literature comprises only 39 well-documented cases.One further case has been reported.When joint fluid is present, the cytologic examination provides a rapid and minimally invasive approach to demonstrating synovial metastases, even with previously undiagnosed malignancy.
