Though efforts to promote and maintain healthy forests in the UK have increased in recent years, the intrusion of infectious diseases that kill trees and changing weather patterns have left woodlands in a position susceptible to natural disasters, among them wildfires. As recently experienced by an Arensis team member on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands, wildfires when sparked in wooded areas pose a dangerous threat not only to the health and wellbeing of the woodlands but also to local communities and wildlife. Currently, methods such as animal grazing and controlled felling and restocking via natural regeneration are examples of the strategic holistic methodology embraced in the woodlands of the United Kingdom. However, this is not always enough; it is estimated that wildfires in the UK can cost upwards of £55 million (€62 million) annually.
