2007 continues as down year for laser equipment industry

This year continues to appear to be a down year for the laser equipment industry compared with 2006, based on data from AMT-The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This year, orders for laser equipment were 123.3 million dollars in the first quarter and 141.5 million dollars in the second quarter. In 2006, shipments of laser equipment were 151 million dollars in the first and 180.5 million dollars in the second. Starting this year, AMT began reporting orders instead of shipments because the companies participating in its Laser Market Data Survey decided that orders would be a faster indicator of where business is heading and would thereby give laser machine tool builders more time to react to market changes.
