Nozzle clogging during continuous casting of Ti Ti-added Ultra Low C (Ti Ti-ULC) steel has been a serious issue in many steelmaking plants. Typically known clog deposit is a mixture of alumina and frozen steel skull [1], but also contains complex oxide mixture of CaO CaO-ZrO ZrO2-SiO SiO2-etc etc. [2] . 2]. While an effective countermeasure of Ti . Ti- free ULC steel has been available, it is not effective to suppress the nozzle clogging during the casting of Ti Ti- ULC steel. Mechanism of the clogging has been also unclear. The present study tried to elucidate the mechanism of initial growth of the clog deposit using CALPHAD thermodynamics and experimental validation.
