Few things destroy cutting tools as much as scale on steel castings. The abrasive oxides and embedded sand particles remain a problem as old as casting itself. But Jerry Engrav, milling department supervisor for Winegar Inc.,Waseca, Minn., solved the problem on a repeat job by coming in at a different angle. Cutting edge life doubled and throughput increased 25 percent. The "different angle" refers to tangential milling, which means that the inserts lie flat around the cutter's circumference. That is 90° away from the insert orientation in conventional facemills, where the inserts "stand up."
