Jig-boring machines are considered "mother" machines because they are often used to make highly accurate components for other types of machine tools. Other uses include the making of molds and dies, and producing and reworking critical aircraft components such as gearboxes. Built to last, it's not uncommon to see jig borers from the 1940s and '50s still producing high-precision parts. "You can't get rid of these machines. They last forever," said Greg Dunkley, vice president and general manager for American SIP Corp., Hebron, Ky.
