The lowdown on coated abrasives

Coated abrasives are composed of three common elements: a backing to support the abrasive grains, a binder to anchor the grains to the backing and an abrasive grain for cutting. The selection of a backing is dictated by operating parameters such as work-piece shape, grinding force, stock-removal requirements, surface-finish requirements, whether grinding is done wet or dry, and expected service life. The five major backing materials are paper, cloth, vulcanized fiber, nonwoven web and film.
