In a tough manufacturing climate, machine tool operators tend to gravitate toward spindle repair and rebuild instead of purchasing new. A less expensive option, repair/rebuild allows users to revamp process tolerances with less outlay than purchasing a new spindle. "Basically, users are buy in fewer new spindles," said Daniel Springhorn, owner of Diebold Goldring Tooling USA, Sharon, Wis. "Spindles are being rebuilt mainly due to the incidence of bearing wear and crashes," added Tony Landl, spindle lab manager at Wm. Sopko & Sons Co., Cleveland. "With today's machine tools and their associated CNC servo-drive speeds, the incidence of spindle crashes has increased [and the crashes] are more rapid and catastrophic. When a crash occurs, the damage to the spindle usually involves bending the quill or damaging the bearings."
