We examine a weakness of wireless transmission using single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE), namely, the need for a guard interval (GI) with a cyclic prefix to make linear convolution over the channel simulate circular convolution, allowing equalization in the frequency domain. Specifically, we focus on two existing schemes, the modified MMSE FDE with replica signal, and the overlap FDE, which are designed to mitigate the effect of having an insufficient or absent GI, describing them in detail. We propose an iterative extension to the MMSE FDE with replical signal method, and evaluate all methods' BER performance at two levels of GI insufficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed iterative extension shows BER improvements for moderately insufficient GI for Rayleigh fading channels with exponential power delay profile (PDP).
