In the late 1970s, I attended a seminar given by M Rifkin at The Rockefeller University in which she described for the first time the mechanism of lysis of African trypanosomes by human serum. At that time, I was working in complement research and I was surprised (and, I confess, skeptical) of the evidence showing that the lytic factor was not complement but instead a high-density lipoprotein particle containing apoprotein A-I (Apo-AI).
