NIH global health fellowship reinvents itself

In a sweeping move, a US National Institutes of Health (NIH) programme to train global health researchers widens its medical focus, expands across the NIH, switches clientele, limits funding for trainees outside the USA, and dismantles an administrative hub.The NIH Fogarty Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars is giving US$20-3 million to 20 US universities, grouped into five consortia. Over 5 years, 400 clinician-scientists will train for 11 months in developing countries.The programme, launched in 2004, continues to expand from infectious diseases to non-communicable conditions such as cancer, diabetes, respiratory disease, neurological disorders, and mental illness. The broader medical spectrum will attract a new crop of researchers, raising the programme's visibility across the NIH.
