What happened to play? Physical play-play that leads to improved fitness. With our modern conveniences, computers, cars, and sprawling communities, we've engineered physical activity out of our daily lives. Young children have playgrounds. Some older children compete in organized sports. Adults may work out at a gym. But we could all play!Move around playfully. Engage the spirit gleefully. Use all parts of the body, in different directions, at many speeds, in varying ways. We must build physical activity back into the fabric of normal everyday life. Critical in the fight against obesity, increased physical activity decreases health risks for both normal weight and overweight people. Fitness activities decrease mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer incidence, and osteoporosis. A system of neighborhood fitness parks, designed as interconnected, physically challenging landscapes, could play a key role in returning fun and social fitness activities to our daily lives!
