Resource Majors Downsize and Consolidate Coal Business (2)

Anglo American plc is forecast to withdraw from the futureless thermal coal business sooner or later. Anglo American now has been developing the thermal coal business in South Africa and Colombia, of which the Company is now running such multiple thermal coal mines in South Africa as Gpedehoop Colliery, Zibulo Colliery and so on. Anglo American produced 14.228 million tons of coal (based on its interest holding portion, and the same applies hereinafter) in South Africa in the former half (January – June) of 2020. This represents an increase of 322,000 tons (2.3%) versus the year-earlier period. On the one hand, the Company is running Cerrejon open-cut coal mine in Colombia on a conjoint basis with BHP Group Limited (BHP) and Glencore plc. 3 companies including Anglo America respectively hold a 33.3% interest in the said coal mine.
