Weekly coal carloads drop 8.9%, down 3.1% YTD

The nation’s Class I railroads’ coal carloads ended the week of Feb. 16 down by 8.9% to 80,105, according to the Association of American Railroads. That amounted to a year-on-year drop of 7,853 carloads during the week, compared with the comparable week of 2018. For the first seven weeks of 2019, cumulative coal loadings logged in at 560,133 to average 80,019 over the seven weeks, down 3.1% from the same 2018 period, according to AAR figures.
