Equinor to drill new wells at delayed Norwegian gas field over safety concerns

London-Norway's state-controlled Equinor said Sept. 8 it had opted to drill new gas wells at the major Martin Linge field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea after analysis showed that wells drilled before it became operator in 2018 were “inappropriate” for safe production. Equinor took over in March 2018 as operator of Martin Linge from France's Total, which drilled four gas wells before the change in operators. “Equinor conducted an in-depth analysis of the wells drilled at Martin Linge before the company took over as the operator of the field from Total in 2018. This review concludes that several of the wells do not have the necessary barriers,” Equinor said in a statement. “Equinor, therefore, plans to drill new wells in order to ensure safe production,” it said.
