Hong Kong—China’s second-biggest alumina production base Shanxi province produced 2.765 million mt of alumina in January-February, down 23% year on year, amid local bauxite ore shortage, National Statistics Bureau data showed Monday. Due to the fall in alumina supply, the province’s aluminum ingot output in the period fell 3.2% year on year to 140,000 mt, NBS data showed. The decline in output is attributed to the tight domestic environment control, with the Shanxi government having stopped power and explosives supply to mines that did not meet state rules over the past two months, tidying up the chaotic bauxite mining sector.
