In vitro multiplication of Centella asiatica, a medicinal herb from leaf explants.

A method for the micropropagation of C. asiatica from leaf explants is presented. Multiple shoots were produced by petiole-less explants on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with BAP [benzyladenine] at 2 mg/litre + IBA at 0.1 mg/litre. Shoot growth and differentiation was observed following transfer to a medium containing BAP (3 mg/litre) + NAA (0.05 mg/litre). Root initiation and growth occurred following transfer to media with or without an auxin; the best growth was observed in the presence of IBA at 1 mg/litre. Rooted plants exhibited 89% survival when transferred to pots containing a soil:sand (2:1) mixture and placed in a greenhouse.
