In the Department of Earth & Ocean Sciences, Earl Bardsley has an active research group covering a wide range of hydrological subject areas. Carrie Hopkirk has completed her MSc on water budget modelling of Lake Waikaremoana. Carrie was pleased to be awarded the best student presentation prize at the 2010 Hydrological Society conference at Dunedin. A brief summary of Carrie's work will appear in due course in the NZ Journal of Hydrology. Ying Qiao is another recent MSc completion, detecting shifts in hydroclimatic time series in the Waikato / Whanganui basins. Earl's current list of PhD students includes Bevan Jenkins (probability models of baseflow recessions), Ali Shokri (groundwater flow patterns around Kawerau), Mohammed Majeed (simulating seasonal pumped storage at Onslow), Catherine Liu (use of rain radar to aid flood forecasting on the Rangitaiki River) and Varvara Vetrova (seasonal forecasting of inflows to the Waitaki hydro lakes). The PhD group all attended the Hydrological Society conference in Wellington and, funds permitting, are likely to be seen again at the Nelson conference in November.
