Les Basher has been busy writing up the results of field data collectionprogrammes in the Motueka and Raglan catchments as the data collection phasecomes to an end. The Motueka paper compares the magnitude and persistence ofsediment yield responses to land-use change (forest harvesting) with those from theimpacts of large storms. It turns out the magnitude of the response is similar, butthe large storm response is more persistent than the land-use change response. TheRaglan paper analyses the soil water dynamics on a steep instrumented hillslope.Part of the slope failed in a small landslide and the instrumental record spans theperiod leading up to and during the landslide. The field-measured hydrology isparticularly complex and compares poorly with simulations using the SHETRANmodel. Les and Jagath Ekanayake have just submitted a paper to HydrologicalProcesses on modelling landsliding using SHETRAN.
