Chinese steel production picks up speed mid-May: CISA

Singapore—China’s total crude steel output over May 10-20 averaged 2.76 million mt/day, up 1.27% from early May but down 2.46% from the same period a year earlier, China Iron & Steel Association’s latest report showed. The mid-May daily output was lower than April’s full month average of 2.834 million mt/day. June is a seasonally slow month due to wet weather in southern China and higher steel inventories, which could explain slightly softer production over May 10-20 as mills anticipated fewer sales next month.
