EFET calls on EC to strengthen carbon market

London—The European Commission and EU member states should establish a timeline for adjusting the annual cap on carbon emissions under the EU Emissions Trading System, the European Federation of Energy Traders said Tuesday. The group also called on EU regulators to make progressive adjustments to the Market Stability Reserve, which cuts the surplus of allowances under the EU ETS each year to balance the market. “In the short term the challenge remains to strengthen the ETS within the existing scope of installations to which it applies,” EFET said in a response to the EC’s consultation on a future EU strategy on energy system integration.
