Outokumpu Tornio to gain 100,000 tpy and reduce lead times through digitalized stainless steel production

Outokumpu hopes to increase capacity by 100,000 tonnes per yearand significantly improve lead times by fully digitalizing productionat its site in Tornio, Finland, by 2020, it said on June 17.The stainless steel producer has been working with software giantMicrosoft to build an industrial digital platform, Outokumpu DigitalPlatform (ODP), that will result in end-to-end digital manufacturingand will transform the Tornio site “into the most digitalized and mostcost-competitive stainless steel operation in the industry by 2020”.“With digitalization of Tornio operations, Outokumpu aims tosignificantly reduce lead times to customers through step-changeimprovements in reliability, quality and supply chain management,and to gain up to 100,000 tonnes of freed capacity from the existingproduction assets,” the company said.
