OSR yields fluctuate widely after flea beetle damage

Dry weather and cabbage stem flea beetle attacks have taken their toll on yields of many oilseed rape crops, but others have done well, giving a variable picture to the early rapeseed harvest across south and east England. David Jones reports. Oilseedrape yields are showing wide swings, with impressive yields in Kent touching 5t/ha being offset by crops badly ravaged by flea beetle further north and west in Cambridgeshire and Wiltshire.The south-east corner of England seems to have escaped the worst of the spring drought and cabbage stem flea beetle attacks, with a handful of early maturing crops showing yields above the long-term average.
