Japanese thermal coal imports drop in January

Japanese thermal coal imports fell narrowly short of the five-year average in January, ministry of finance provisional data show. Thermal coal receipts fell by 6.5pc year on year to 9.98mn t in January, which was also nearly 7pc lower than the five-year average of 10.1mn t for the first month of the year. The average value of Japanese thermal coal imports rose by 6.7pc compared with January 2016, to 11,835 yen/t ($106.71/t).
